What is “Cold Brew” Coffee?

With summer quickly approaching, every place that serves coffee seems to be using the buzz word, “cold brew coffee”, but what is it and why is everyone talking about it? Isn’t it just coffee poured over ice? Well, not exactly…..it is over ice, but it is the brewing method that makes it unique and delicious!

Cold Brew Coffee – coffee that is slowly brewed with room temperature or cold water for an extended period. (10-24 hours)

Flash Brewing

I must point out that “cold brew coffee” is not the same as “iced coffee”. They are brewed completely different resulting in a vastly different taste! There is also a new type of cold coffee called “flash brewing” that seems to be hot in coffee brewing trends. (Flash brewing is pouring near boiling water over coffee grounds and then chilling it. )

Iced Coffee -ร‚ย coffee that is brewed hot and then chilled by pouring over or adding ice.

I love authentic cold brew coffee because the slow drip method doesn’t muddle the flavors of the coffee. The coffee is not bitter, but rather full bodied and smooth. The consistent slow drip of the brewing process, highlights the flavors and often brings a natural sweetness to the coffee.

The Yama Glass Tower is the most popular brand you see at coffee shops, but are available for home use as well. I would love to have one, but at $200 I’ll just enjoy the Yama from my local coffee shop table! There is a more budget friendly option that I’m leaning towards which is theร‚ย Cold Bruer, ($80). It is a slow drip cold brew device designed for the home. It takes the functionality of a Yama drip tower and condenses it into a device that is shorter than a blender. Both are great options for enjoying cold brew at home!

One more way to enjoy coffee that is iced would be an iced Americano. This is a favorite of mine as well, because I always enjoy a good espresso.

Iced Americano – Espresso combined with cold water and poured over ice.

All of these drinks are super yummy for the summer and can be easily enjoyed at home. So, the next time you are in the mood for coffee over ice, you now know the vast differences between them and be able to enjoy making your choice.
