10 Things Every Coffee Lover Needs

*disclosure – this post contains affiliate links*

Today I wanted to share with you 10 things every coffee lover needs. Here you will find a top ten list of my favorite things as a coffee lover! I have used many of these products and enjoy them as a coffee enthusiast. This is also a great gift list for a coffee lover you may know, so make sure you pin it for later!

1 – Coffee Grinder
To extract the best flavor from the coffee bean, it is always best to grind the bean, immediately before brewing. This electric coffee grinder shown below is the one I have. It is a burr grinder, referring to the type of blades it has. A burr grinder ensures that the beans are ground in a uniform size, and you have more control over your grind than you do with a blade.

2- Quality Coffee Maker

A few years back, I was searching for a new drip coffee maker and discovered the Bonavita coffee maker. I love two things about this coffee maker. 1- the shower head and how it disperses water evenly over the coffee grounds and 2- the precise 1500-watt heater that maintains optimal brewing temperature of 195°-205°F.  Two years later this coffee maker is easy to use and still delivers the perfect cup of coffee every morning!

3-Coffee Storage

How you store your coffee beans is very important to maintain the freshness levels. This is a much debated subject, but personally I have found that my beans stay most fresh in a dark, air tight container stored on my coffee bar. I will  be giving away a Coffee Gator air tight canister the week of my two year anniversary, August 8th, 2017!

4- Coffee Scale

I was late to the game in purchasing a scale to weigh my coffee. Until a year or so ago, I was still using my tablespoon, lol. But once I begin making pour over coffees at home, using a scale was a must. Having a scale to weigh your coffee brings consistency, creating the same brew every time.

5- Chemex, Kalita or V60

Owning a Chemex will introduce you to a whole new flavor from your coffee beans! I encourage owning a Chemex because its a personal favorite, but there are many different ones you can use to make a pour over at home. These items range from making one cup, up to eight. As a coffee lover, this also brings a bit a fun into brewing coffee. Trying new ways to extract different flavors from a bag of beans is something you should try!

6- Go to Coffee Mug

Every coffee lover needs that one mug that has just the perfect saying on it and is their go to morning mug! Here are a few of my favorites!

7- Travel Mug

Yes, we all need coffee for the road and making sure the coffee stays hot and fresh for several hours is a must! I personally love the corkcicle, it keeps my coffee hot for hours and then can be used to keep my ice water cold later that day.

8- A Good Coffee Book

I know a lot about coffee, but always enjoy learning more! A good coffee book is fun to read and something every coffee nerd will enjoy. Some of these books also explore the history of coffee!

9- Splurging on quality, fresh roasted coffee

What coffee lover doesn’t want to taste the freshest coffee they can get their hands on? Trying out a new roaster, or coffee is something everyone wants to be spoiled by once in a while! Some of my favorite, award winning roasters are Mad Cap Coffee, Bird Rock Coffee and MANY more!

10 – A Coffee Subscription Box

Finally, one new thing I have discovered this year is companies that deliver fresh coffee and coffee related goodies, right to your doorstep every month! My favorite one so far is by Cool Beans Box from Texas, (see my review). This makes a fantastic gift and EVERY coffee lover needs to try one at least once! 1. I would also add a GLASS coffee mug to the list. Glass is the least porous material available that mugs come in and therefore allows for the least flavor transfer between the cup and the coffee. You’ll experience the truest coffee flavor from a glass cup/mug.

  2. Loved loved loved this blog post!! I picked up some great tips and put a few of those Amazon products in my cart too! Wow! I’m ready to make better coffee and experience new coffee shops too! Thanks CT!!! 🙂

  3. I’m in the process of coffee maker shopping now. I’ve had a Nespresso machine for over 10 years but am moving to a drip style machine. Question about the Chemex – which my hubby loves the look of, but I am concerned about – how long does the coffee stay hot when using one of these styles?

    1. Hi Andi – I love the Chemex, but honestly I struggle keeping it hot. I would highly recommend the Bonavita! Anymore questions feel free to message me!

  4. Good list.
If I was to add one more thing to your list, it would be water filter of some type. I keep a breta filter on my bar. I really feel that good coffee can be ruined by bad water.

On manual grinders, I’m looking to replace mine. Several weekends ago my manual burr grinder, with plastic and ceramic components, broke. Looking to get one that is all steel. I will keep you posted…I’ve read somethings about ceramic grinders. Apparently they don’t do a “cutting” in the grind rather they “smash” into a grind. Thinking about testing some out to see the difference.

  5. Call me an amateur, but I’ve never heard of using a coffee scale! I have just discovered the french press, and have fallen in love with the flavor. It’s our Sunday morning go-to for leisurely coffee. This was really interesting stuff!

  6. I really want one of those fancy vintage (or new) ceramic French filter things that goes on the top of a cup. I keep trying to remember the brand that I saw but all I can remember is the vacuum brand Miele which isn’t correct :p

I was so lucky to receive about 20 bags of coffee from a company this week (blogger perks!) and about 4 of them coffee beans, I was so close to buying a bean grinder and my husband reminded me that we have a nutri bullet, so I managed to save some money! woo!

  8. I’m a bit of a coffee snob (OK, I’m a lot of a coffee snob) and my mantra is “no instant coffee, no percolated coffee, no powdered creamer and for the love of all that is holy…no styrofoam cups!” My grandpa used to say that life is too short to drink bad coffee…and he was right!

  9. Great tips! I recently switched from a Keurig to a french press and I’m amazed at the difference. I even bought a coffee grinder and it’s a game changer!!

  10. Oh Yeah!! My kind of post! I’ve been looking into new brewers for a more convenient cup of Joe! I currently pour over every cup… I don’t always have time for that! Thanks for this list! <3

  11. What a great round-up! We definitely need to upgrade our coffee machine. We love coffee but we usually end up going to coffee shops because we don’t have the best equipment haha
